Who do you feel was the greatest heavyweight boxing champion?

No Wikipedia cites, please!!! Simple matter of your opinion based upon their records, who was the greatest heavyweight boxing champion? A couple of names should leap to mind immediately: Ali, Marciano, Louis - no matter who it was, you had to be good, so who do you personally think was the greatest and why?|||MUHAMMAD ALI

this man to me was not only a great boxing figure but someone who stood for his belief which was peace and equality to everyone. who would forget his dislike with the vietnam war and many respected him when he stood his ground. he was light heavyweight champ in the 1960 olympics. he compiled great wins and got his first title shot against sonny liston. despite his impressive wins, ali was not widely expected to defeat liston. sonny was a feared man then but ali was determined to " shake up the world " and he did it in a dominant fashion.

there was no stopping from there as he would knock out liston again in the rematch this time in just one round hence the birth of " the panthom punch ". on his second defense he beat another legend in floyd patterson by KO. he continously beat all the big names of his era. he decisioned the awesome george chuvalo, went to england and defeated sir henry cooper by stoppage and unleased a severe beating on terell who refuse to call him ali.

the thing that i love about ali is really his fighting style, he was very flambouyant. he was like willie pep of heavyweight division. he was not the regular heavyweight who moves slow. he was dancing magnificently allowing him to land jabs at the same time being very elusive. he carried his hands low and relied on foot speed and quickness which was really unmatched.

really it will take me 2 days if i list all ali's accomplishments as he defeated all big names in his golden era which includes joe frazier, archie moore, george foreman, jerry quarry, ken norton, name all the big names of his era and he beat 'em all.

he was also named fighter of the year by ring magazine i believe four times tied with manny pacquiao. was involved in more fight of the year bouts than any other fighter, won sportsman of the year award by sports illustrated, he was possibly the most popular boxer ever,, anyone who can throw a punch surely knows ali,, he was simply that great and nobody comes close to him. in his golden era he just beat them all and most in dominating fashion.|||This is an interesting question because I love Everlast Boxing. Alot better than all that UFC crap, but let's get to the question. Well I've seen the famous ALI vs Foreman fight, which I think was held in Jamaica?? That was an intense boxing match. ALI had the speed %26amp; Foreman had the power! Then several years after Tyson comes to the ring with the knockout punch lol. I heard Frazier and Rocky Marciano was great back in the 30's %26amp; 40's also. Wish I could've seen Rocky's fights.|||By record alone you gotta go with Marciano 49-0, 43 KO's

Ali had speed and skill, the best skill wise, but had some scandals associated with him, phantom punch (2nd Liston fight), refusal to be drafted, hurts.

Joe Louis- Awesome fighter, held title for a long time

Jack Johnson- most famous for breaking the colour barrier and becoming the 1st black heavyweight champion, but he had skills too

Jack Dempsey-really started the age of heavyweights who had agility and speed|||Tyson, man was an absolute savage in his early days, he had an unbelievable combination of Speed and power resulting in impressive knockouts early in rounds! His record of 50 wins with 44 knockouts is massively impressive, and is symbolic of the mans ruthless fighting style, he went out in fights not to beat his opponent but to annihilate them! His greatness is overshadowed by the losses he endured late on in his career and by his troubles outside the ring. Personally I think in his prime if he was put in the ring with any of the greats, he would knock any of them out! The guy Is a true great!|||I happen to like Joe Louis, as he held the title for nearly 12 years and defended it 25 times. he only time he lost was 1 fight early in his career and those when he needed to come back after retirement to pay off IRS liens. Ali, was a close second or probably tied, but I remember Ali getting hit by ordinary fighters, although he did have a great chin, I can see Louis getting him along the ropes like Cooper and KO ing him.

Louis Ali tied|||James J. Jeffries - take away the ill-advised comeback and he revolutionized the division during his title reign through his athleticism, speed and power...he retired not due to diminished skills, but because he had run out of challengers for the belt; had arguably the greatest left hook of any heavyweight, ever.|||Absolutely Joe Louis. He was a knock out artist. He could knock an opponent out with one punch.

He had the best left hook in boxing. A very dangerous puncher and very strong. In order to fight him you would always have to be moving around. Standing toe to toe with him is suicide.|||My lover read book have experts say Jim "Boilermaker" Jeffries is best of 20th Century. He retire, then return is "Great White Hope" fight brash champion Jack "Galveston Giant" Johnson. Jeffries-san cannot restore fighting condition, is older, still Johnson-san have tough fight. If Jeffries-san at best he badly beat Johnson-san.|||....Cassius Clay (Ali). He set the boxing world on it's ear when he fought Liston. That was the fight that set him on the road to superstardom. There's never been another boxer that entered the ring with such confidence and swagger as he did. Plus he was fun to watch.|||My top 10 heavyweights of all time:

1. Ali

2. Louis

3. Holmes

4. Foreman

5. Dempsey

6. Marciano

7. Liston

8. Frazier

9. Johnson

10. Lewis|||Here are my picks based on performance in championship fights Joe Louis, Muhummad Ali, Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Wladimir Klieschko, Evander Holyfield, Ezzard Charles, Vitali Klitschko, Floyd Patterson.....nuff said !|||ali had speed, reflexes, sharpness, fitness, chin, underrated power, and determination to go with his abrasiveness. there were many great fighters in the division, but ali is tops.|||Joe Louis or Joe Louis|||I think he was the greatest because "he could flit like a butterfly and sting like a bee!"|||I'm not into stats; simply raw entertainment. He's a scary guy.|||me
