I am trying to get into dog showing. I juust got my junior handler number. My mom said she used to know a girl who ownd grand champion great danes. How many points dose a dog need to be a grand champion?|||15 to be a champion here in the USA. You need 2 majors (a win of 3-5 points at one time) and the rest can be singles or majors. If a dog finishes with 3 five point majors that's a pretty decent job (or 3 crappy judges!!). I should also add that the two majors have to be under different judges. After that, you can "special" the dog and enter them in the Best of Breed class. This is comprised of champions and one ***** and one dog that won from the other classes. The goal is to win this class and move on to the groups. There are 7 groups comprised of one dog or ***** that won Best of Breed in their class. The winners (1-4) are selected and the winner from each group goes on to Best in Show where the 7 dogs and bitches all compete to win. It's best to remember that the dogs aren't being judged against one another but against their breed "standard". No dog is the perfect animal but whoever meets their standard the closest should win. Some dogs are just more typey and will win because of that where others that should aren't, which is why a dog will sometimes win under one judge and not another. That and if they are having an off day it can affect their performance as well.
Edit: AKC's description of a grand champion:
Grand Champion:
A Bench Show Champion must win 3 Champion Classes with competition (against all Champions).
Bench Show Champion:
Dogs must have a total of a 100 pts under two different judges and 1 Best In Show win with competition.
There aren't many benched shows in my area of the country. None in fact without a 1,000 mile drive. Westminster is a benched show.
Edit: I didn't think AKC had any such thing as a Grand Champion either till I looked on their website. My folks have shown dogs all my life and I of coarse was involved till I left home. I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't know!!!|||The link has all of the abbreviations with AKC and tells you what they have to have done to get that title. I have never heard of a grand champion dog with AKC, but it looks like they have it. I have heard of it with CKC and FCI though.|||The AKC doesn't offer "Grand" Championships. Perhaps the woman your mother spoke of showed in the UKC, which offers this title. I don't know how UKC shows work, but here is a description of their titles:

Good luck with Juniors!
